Declaration of 1812

During the war of 1812, New England (including Clinton) was blockaded by the British (Clinton was a big ship building town then) many people wanted to secede from the union and make a separate peace with England. Clinton had been raided by the British (led by Captain Thomas Hardy, Commander) approximately 14 times. However, at the Hartford Convention the following document (Declaration) was presented by the "loyal citizens of America".

This declaration was signed by 73 citizens, eight of them were Kelseys. Look at your line of descent and see if any of them are your Ancestors. They were:

Gideon Kelsey #868 Vol. II, Pg. 141 (Silas 283, Samuel 64, Daniel 9) "This is the same Gideon Kelsey who lived on Waterside Lane (The Lane to the Water) during that war, who, seeing a large block island boat passing the harbor, shouted to his neighbors, Silas and William Wilcox "Let's go down and get a shot at them" which they proceeded to do. They loaded the guns while he fired until the boat was too far away.
