Declaration of 1812

Declaration of 1812

During the war of 1812, New England (including Clinton) was blockaded by the British (Clinton was a big ship building town then) many people wanted to secede from the union and make a separate peace with England. Clinton had been raided by the British (led by Captain Thomas Hardy, Commander) approximately 14 times. However, at the Hartford Convention the following document (Declaration) was presented by the "loyal citizens of America".

"Whereas great pains have been taken to impress the public mind with the idea that the war in which we are engaged with Great Britain is extensively unpopular and that it will not be supported by the people of New England the undersigned think proper to declare that while they lament the necessity of a war they are fixed in the determination to support it till the attainment of an honorable peace"

This declaration was signed by 73 citizens, eight of them were Kelseys. Look at your line of descent and see if any of them are your Ancestors. They were:

Asa Kelsey #427 Vol. II, Pg. 43 (Gideon 143, Joseph 445, John 6);
Eli Kelsey #571 Vol. II, Pg. 65 (Josiah 171, Josiah 40, John 6);
John Kelsey (can't identify him);
Josiah Kelsey #576, Vol. II, Pg. 66 (Josiah 40, John 6);
Rufus Kelsey #933 Vol. II, Pg. 164 (Daniel 343, John 34, John 6);
Solomon Kelsey #770 Vol. II, Pg. 120 (Jehiel 248k, William 55, Daniel 9);
Samuel Kelsey #845 Vol. II, Pg. 137 (Samuel 281, Samuel 4, Daniel 9);
Gideon Kelsey #868 Vol. II, Pg. 141 (Silas 283, Samuel 64, Daniel 9) "This is the same Gideon Kelsey who lived on Waterside Lane (The Lane to the Water) during that war, who, seeing a large block island boat passing the harbor, shouted to his neighbors, Silas and William Wilcox "Let's go down and get a shot at them" which they proceeded to do. They loaded the guns while he fired until the boat was too far away.
